When most people think of driving through Texas, they imagine long, boring stretches of flat desert. Unfortunately, this way of thinking causes many to miss out on the breathtaking beauty that some Texas roads have to offer. The state is large and offers plenty of stunningly scenic drives. From highways and historic roads to hill country drives, here’s a collection of some of the diamonds in the rough.

Lonesome Highway

The majestic Guadalupe Mountains rise out of the Lonesome Highway, a drive on which you likely won’t see many cars. The route is perfect for some personal contemplation. Travel westward on highway 285 to highway 180 where you will turn left and proceed through the beautiful mountains and cliffs.

El Camino Real

One of the oldest highways in the world, El Camino Real dates all the way back to the 17th-century colonial era. Also called The King’s Highway or Highway 21, it starts near the scenic Toledo Bend Reservoir in Milam and stretches all the way to near San Antonio. The drive may not be as scenic as others, but some stretches have plenty of greenery and the route’s rich history will have you begging for more.

FM 170

Running next to the Rio Grande, this route is known as the River Road. There are several exciting curves in the road, so be wary if you get motion sick. Rolling hills and mountains surround you and the river runs beside, guiding the way. It has been referenced in National Geographic’s “Drives of a Lifetime” issue.

Highway 207

If you like red rock, then this is the drive for you. This highway goes through Palo Duro Canyon, the second largest canyon in the United States. Head toward Palo Duro Canyon State Park and you’ll find some spectacular views.

Texas Swiss Alps Scenic Drive

Boasting mountains fully covered in green, which is rare in Texas, this beautiful drive will give you a very small taste of the Alps. Starting in Bandera and going through Concan, you’ll head to Medina after hopping on the 337 in Leakey.

Willow City Loop

With beautiful wildflowers in the spring and summer, Willow City Loop is located east of Willow City and is accessed by taking Ranch Road 1323 and then taking a left on Willow City Loop.

Go Driving

Now that you have a good overview of some of the best scenic drives in Texas, it’s time to get out there and experience all the beauty the Lone Star State has to offer. Take a family road trip and bond with family members while you’re out on the road, or just enjoy some quality alone time.
