Give Yourself Extra Time to Avoid Rushing
October 28, 2011 | in Rules of the Road: Driving TipsIt’s not surprising that most auto accidents occur because at least one of the parties involved was in a hurry. When someone is running behind schedule, they’re much more likely to speed or otherwise be careless on the road and that’s simply a recipe for disaster. While it’s possible to come up with a number of excuses for why you were late, none of them are truly valid when you take into consideration the possible consequences of an accident.
The best way to avoid this situation is to plan ahead and prepare accordingly. This kind of advice can seem trite and even clichéd but not enough people follow it. Do you know exactly how long it’s going to take you to get from one place to another? Perhaps you have a fairly good idea based on a GPS read out or an internet search but have you taken into account all of the things that could cause a delay in that estimated time of arrival?
No matter how long you think it’ll take to complete your trip, you should give yourself plenty of additional time to make up for any unforeseen circumstances. The more time you factor in, the less pressure you’ll put on yourself should you fall behind. This is especially true when driving somewhere for the first time. Rather than waiting until the last minute to leave, it’s better that you schedule in more time than you think you need because the worst thing that will happen then is that you’ll get to your destination early.
