Driving is something we all do in our daily lives, whether we are going to work, taking our kids to school, going to see family or just going on vacation. But do we ever think about how risky an activity it can be? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2007, a little over 41,000 people lost their lives in traffic related incidents. Put another way, for every 100,000 people in the United States, 14 were killed in a traffic related incident.

This trend is fairly consistent and from 2003 to 2007, the five year average is 42,500. 42,500 people a year lose their life on the road, which is really a staggering number. When you compare this mortality rate to other activities human beings engage in, combat is the only thing more dangerous with the same likelihood of lives lost.

Driving is and has been so much a part of the American experience, yet few realize the human toll or the responsibility we have as drivers to be safe. We continue to increase the number of miles we drive, even in difficult economic times. Americans drive more than 3 million miles a year and given the demonstrated risk, so it should be one item we are trained and re-trained on. Based on what we perceived to be a rather large gap in driver safety training,DefensiveDriving.com® developed a series of defensive driving courses which focus on improving our on-the-road skills.

DefensiveDriving.com‘s defensive driving course online provides an educational refresher to improve your skills behind the wheel. Besides the obvious safety topics related to driving and drinking, DefensiveDriving.com‘s defensive driving course covers topics related proper vehicle maintenance, why vehicle maintenance is important and arriving alive. We cover crash avoidance techniques, which show a driver how to make an effective and safe lane change while driving to avoid an accident. We discuss the proper way to jump start a vehicle, a task most would be surprised they were doing incorrectly.

DefensiveDriving.com examines the impact of different weather conditions while on the road and even demonstrates techniques to regain control of a vehicle in a skid. Finally, DefensiveDriving.com‘s defensive driving course takes a very personal look at stories of those who have been impacted by drinking and driving. DefensiveDriving’s defensive driving courses were designed to improve attitudes and perceptions and encourage an overall understanding of our responsibilities as drivers, not simply to act as a traffic school or for Texas defensive driving for ticket dismissal, our courses were designed to educate and make us all safer in our driving behaviors.
