When both texting and driving are involved, it could be no more than a matter of seconds. Five seconds to be exact. That is the average amount of time that it takes to check your phone while driving. Five seconds. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but at 55 miles per hour, in that five seconds you will travel the length of a football field. Think of how many things you can fit in the length of a football field – how likely do you think it is that you would miss all of them?
With the rising amount of texting-related car accidents, you probably know someone who has been involved in a texting-related car accident; you might even know someone who has died as a result. It is estimated that one in five fatal crashes involving drivers who are 15-19 years old, also involved the use of cellphones. So if you don’t yet know of someone who has been involved in a texting-related car accident, there is a good chance that you will soon.
