The first thing you want to do when you get a new car is to deck it out in all of the cool extra features that make it your ride. But where do you start? Here are some of the best things–some essential and some less so–that you can put in your car to make it your own.

1. duct tape

Duct tape is one of those things that you never run out of uses for. Whether it’s to tape up a bumper, or fix an emergency crack in a window, it’s duct tape to the rescue every time.

2. a supply of air fresheners

Why is it that you never have an air freshener when you need one? Leftover food or dirty gym clothes can quickly stink up a car, but keeping a supply of air fresheners in your glove box can save you. To find out the best selling ones, check out this article.

3. food and water

It is a good idea to keep nonperishable food, such as energy bars, and some water in your car for emergencies, but it can also come in handy if you are on a long drive and are out of food options.

4. portable heater

If you get stranded in your can in the winter, you might need to keep warm, and running the car can be dangerous. A portable heater could literally save your life in this situation.

5. blanket

A cheaper and potentially more reliable option would be to keep a blanket, or a few blankets, in the trunk.

6. cellphone charger/extra battery

Phone batteries don’t last very long, and have a habit of running out when you need them the most. Keep an emergency charger and backup battery in your glove box to prepare for this situation.

7. emergency first aid kit

You also never know when you might have a major or minor medical emergency, so stock your car with an emergency first aid kit. Include a few emergency repair items, such as a couple of tools and a flare for emergencies.

8. a bluetooth device

Distracted driving is dangerous, but if you get a bluetooth device for your car, you can talk hands free, and even listen to music through your car speakers. Luckily, you can win one of these by liking us on Facebook this month!

9. a personal touch

How do you make your new car truly your own? Only you know the answer to that! But there are a lot of ways to add a personal touch to a vehicle, you can browse Etsy or other sites to find the perfect accessory for you.
