Safety is important in any aspect of life, but almost nowhere is it more important than when you are behind the wheel of a car. There are a handful of fundamental safety practices that every driver learns on their very first day of driving a car. But when you’ve been driving for a few years, you start to go into autopilot and any lazy practices can soon become bad habits. Sometimes you just have to go back to basics. So here are five simple safety musts that you should know, but might have forgotten about.
1. using your indicators
One of the most essential, yet most often neglected safe driving practices is the use of indicators. Defensive drivers allow other cars on the road to maneuver safely whenever they need to, but in order to do that, they need to be able to know when it will happen. Indicators are what prevent accidents from happening. It is also important to turn on your hazards when you are pulled over.
2. learn the right of way rules
In every situation on the road, accidents are prevented through knowledge of who has the right of way. However, there are certain occasions in which the right of way becomes unclear, and it can end with a lot of guesswork. Study up on who has the right of way with this article.
3. checking your blind spot
Cars are awesome, but unfortunately they have a tiny design flaw that means that you have a blind spot while driving. And other drivers just love to hang out there. Save some lives and check that blind spot once in awhile.
4. wear a seatbelt
Did you know that seat belts reduce serious crash related injuries and deaths by about half? Buckling up while driving is Driver Safety 101 and will likely save your life. It is also important to remember the proper restraint guidelines for children of all ages. If you want to brush up on these, check this page on the CDC website.
5. keep your eyes on the road
Distracted driving is the cause of thousands of fatalities on the road every year. And the sad part is that it is easily prevented. All we need to do is commit to not drive distracted, and it could make all the difference.
