3 Step Process To Get Out Of A Speeding Ticket
September 11, 2019 | in Defensive Driving TipsYou never plan on seeing the flashing red and blue lights behind you. Nobody does. But it’s important to have an idea of what you are going to do should you ever see them because it could be the difference between a hefty fine and getting off with a warning. Should you ever get pulled over (just always drive defensively and you shouldn’t have to worry), take a deep breath and follow these three steps.
Set the Scene
You need to quickly make it look like there is nothing that could have been distracting you. Of course, in an ideal world you wouldn’t have to change a thing, but just in case, make sure your cell phone is put away, your music is turned down, and you don’t have any food in your hands.
Get in Position
Hopefully you already had both hands on the steering wheel, but if not, they need to be there. Remember, your mission is to make the cop think you are the safest driver in existence. If you have both hands on the wheel when the cop approaches, he will just assume they have been there the entire time. Additionally, your eyes should be focused on the road ahead (at least before the cop gets to the window), and if it’s dark, you may also want to turn the overhead light on.
Use Your Manners
Once the cop arrives at your car door, it’s game time. Put on your “impress the new boss” mode and talk to him with the utmost respect. Ask permission to reach for your insurance and registration so he knows that you aren’t making a move to attack him. You may even want to ask the cop how his day is going to show that you are just a nice person who made an innocent mistake. Above all, be patient, explain the situation, and do not argue. The nicer you are, the more likely you are to get away without a ticket. And hey, you may even make a new friend.
Frequently, the officer has already made the decision to give you the ticket. The good news is that, if the above tactics fail, don’t worry; you can always visit DefensiveDriving.com to get rid of the ticket after the fact.
