Road trips are no fun without some good eats. And eating doesn’t just make your trip more enjoyable, it also gives you the energy you need to stay awake and alert. Here are five of the best foods to take with you on your road trip. They’ll not only keep you in good spirits, but also give you the energy you need to focus on the road.

1) Fruit Leather

Apple slices can go brown quickly, and oranges are hard to peel while you drive. Fruit leather not only stays good, but also tastes good, and you can eat it with one hand. Get the nourishment you need while on the road by picking up some fruit leather. If you get really ambitious, you may even consider making it from scratch.

2) Granola Bars

Another finger food that packs plenty of nutrition and provides you with the energy you need, granola bars come in several varieties. So whether you want a healthier option or one that’s bursting with flavor and calories, a granola bar is a great go-to.

3) Crackers

The classic road trip staple, crackers also come in countless varieties and you can buy according to your taste. It’s usually a good idea to select crackers that don’t crumble too easily or leave a grease or powder residue on your fingers. Nothing’s worse than having a smelly, messy car at the end of a long trip. And no one likes a greasy steering wheel.

4) Flavored Water

It’s important to stay hydrated while you’re out there on the road. Water is always a great option, but flavored water is even better. Drinking a lot may mean you have to stop a few extra times to relieve yourself, but taking breaks every so often will help you stay refreshed and alert and maintain the mental focus you need to stay safe.

5) Grapes

Grapes are a great finger fruit, and the only mess they leave is a dry stem, which is exceedingly easy to clean up. Grapes are not only less messy than most fruits, but also allow for the perfect serving size for everyone in the family. It might be difficult to eat an entire banana, but grapes already come in bite size pieces and each person can eat just the right number of grapes to fill them up.
