Road trip season is in full flow, and people across the country are setting off for the trip of a lifetime on the open road. However, a successful road trip is not just about picking a destination and setting off with some clothes and some friends. The best road trips require at least a bit of preparation beforehand, and that is why we are here to help you out. Check out our seven tips for planning a safe and successful summer road trip, and for more tips, tricks, and ideas, check out our road trip planner.

plan a route ahead of time

Yes, most of us have GPS systems built into our phones these days, but that does not mean that you should not take some time before you leave to plan out a route. If you plan out your route, rather than simply going for the fastest or most direct route offered by Google, you can make sure that you hit the coolest roads, best roadside attractions, or even avoid construction or bad roads along the way.

break up the driving

When you are driving across the country, it can easy to get tired or burned out, which can create a dangerous environment for you, your passengers, and others on the road. Make sure that you have other drivers on hand to share the work, and even if that is not possible, take regular rest stops along your journey–besides, you never know what you might see if you do!

don’t run on empty

You might be carrying a little more weight than you are used to, and you might not have as many gas stations to choose from, so make sure that you do not let your gas tank fall below a third full. You can use Gas Buddy to keep track of the best places to fill up along your journey.

Tune up your car

Before you set off, make a visit to a mechanic, and have the essentials in your vehicle checked. Whether you have a new or old car, there could be underlying problems that only show themselves when you are already halfway there.

check state driving laws and stick to the limit

Although most driving laws are the same nationwide, there are some things, such as phone use while driving, that differ as you travel state to state. Look up the relevant state laws before you travel and save yourself some unnecessary hassle. Furthermore, while it can be tempting to put your foot down and blaze across the country, a lot of interstate roads are speed traps, and you will regret it if you end up with an expensive speeding ticket along your journey.

pack an emergency kit

You don’t know when you might run into car or other trouble, or where it might happen, so it is a good idea to have your car stocked with a few essentials such as a toolkit, a first aid kit, a flashlight, some nonperishable food, and some water.

enjoy the journey!

The main thing that sets road trips apart from other vacations is the fact that it is designed so that you can have fun along the whole journey, not just at your destination. The best road trips are taken by people who are prepared to enjoy the journey with some good snacks, good tunes, and awesome people.
