Manual versus Automatic Transmission: Which is Better?

Since the inception of automatic cars, there has been an ongoing debate over the merits of a vehicle with an automatic transmission, or a traditional manual transition. Certainly every driver has their preference, and there are pros and cons of each. We have weighed out the good and bad of buying each kind of transmission–read on to learn more about them.

Manual

Pros:
–Can be Cheaper
This is not a hard and fast rule when it comes to price, but as most Americans are not comfortable driving a stick shift, a car with a manual transmission can often be found for less than an automatic–especially if it is used. They are sometimes cheaper to maintain, for example manual transmission fluid doesn’t deteriorate as quickly as automatic transmission fluid.
–More Power
A lot of car enthusiasts love the added power, especially during acceleration, that comes with a manual transition.
–Fuel Economy
Because of the nature of a stick shift, fuel economy is often much better than with an automatic transmission, especially as clutch control can prevent as much braking and acceleration.
Cons:
–Harder to Find
There is no question that manual cars are a lot harder to find, especially since improvements have been made to automatic vehicles to make them more reliable. And because of their scarcity, they can become difficult to find–especially when looking for a used car.
–Potential Extra Repairs
Though manual cars can be cheaper to repair, it is often the automatics that will be more reliable in the first few years of life. Often as a result of the wear and tear from inexperienced drivers, the clutch can receive quite a bit of wear, and burn out.
–Learning to Drive Stick
If you did not learn how to drive in a manual car, you might find it difficult to pick up, and it will take some patience.

Automatic

Pros:
-Hands off Driving
Obviously “hands off” is not meant literally, but there is certainly a lot more multitasking when it comes to driving stick. An automatic is a much more leisurely experience.
–Is No Longer a Lesser Vehicle
When automatic cars were first available, they were often seen as less reliable and more prone to problems than the alternative. Now however, they are every bit as reliable as manuals.
–More Options
As previously stated, manuals are more widely available in the USA. There are also more options for the average car owner if you are looking for an automatic.
Cons:
–Not as Much “Control”
Car lovers often prefer the amount of control that comes with a stick shift, and can find it frustrating that an automatic does not allow one the ability to change gear at will.
–Sometimes Unavailable
If you are looking for a vehicle such as a sports car, certain models are not actually available with an automatic transmission, taking the decision out of your hands anyway.
