Road Side Assistance: What You Need to Know

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Defensive Driving Tips

There’s comes a time in every driver’s life when you end up on the side of the road in a panic. Maybe you ran out of gas (you know you should have filled up before you hit the highway), or perhaps you have a flat tire (you probably should have paid more attention when your dad was teaching you how to change a flat). Whatever problem you are facing, it is time to take a deep breath and give your roadside assistance a call.

What is roadside assistance?

Simply put, it is a service that can provide you with the help you need if something goes awry with your car. Most roadside assistance companies will provide basic services that are required if your car becomes unusable on the side of the road, such as changing a flat tire, giving you a little bit of fuel to help you get to the nearest gas station, providing you with a jump start if your battery dies, and towing your car if you are really in trouble.

How do I get it?

You may be surprised to find out that you already have it. It seems like everywhere you turn companies are offering free roadside assistance (AAA is the most popular). You will want to check your insurance policy to see if you have it (most do), but you may also be pleased to learn that many car companies will provide roadside assistance with the purchase of a new car. If you don’t already have it, you should consider adding it onto your insurance policy because it is usually only a few dollars per month, but it will make your life a lot less stressful should you require its services.

Why should I use it?

Even if you do know how to change a flat tire, or you can call a friend to help you start your car or bring you some gas, you may as well take advantage of your roadside assistance. Especially because changing a flat tire on the side of the freeway is not always the safest thing to do. You are better off leaving it to the experts.
