Shopper’s Beware: 3 Safety Tips to Follow this Holiday Season…

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Defensive Driving Tips

Bring on the sales and the gift giving, the holiday shopping season has arrived! But before you get too eager, it’s time for some friendly reminders to help you stay safe while you are out finding the perfect present for everyone on your list.

Follow the Buddy System

As always, there is strength in numbers. When at all possible, shop with at least one other person. Not only will it make the experience more fun, but you will also keep away the bad guys because you won’t be such an easy target. If you do end up shopping alone, please, do not hesitate to ask for security to escort you to your car. This is especially true if you are shopping at night or are heading to a parking garage. You may feel slightly embarrassed, but hey, that’s better than being assaulted (or worse!) any day.

Hide the Goods

Chances are you are hitting multiple stores on your shopping spree. While this is a surefire way to get you all the best deals, it also means you will have gifts (a.k.a. high-priced items you really don’t want to have to buy again) being left in your car, just screaming to be taken. Your best course of action? Reduce the temptation and make sure none of the purchased items are visible when you head into the next store. If all of the goods won’t fit in your trunk (or if you have a vehicle that doesn’t have a hidden trunk), bring some extra winter coats or blankets with you to cover up the valuables before you head into the next shopping destination.

Use Common Sense

With all of the excitement of getting 50% off of the perfect gift for someone, it can be easier than you would think to forget the safety basics. Don’t worry: We have your back. Here’s a brief rundown for you. Always lock your car, both when you leave it and immediately upon entry. You also want to make sure you have your keys in your hands before you head outside so you can be aware of your surroundings instead of digging through your purse. And on that note, please don’t keep your nose in your smartphone as you meander through the dark parking lot. That’s like begging to be a victim of theft.
